WHY?

Family Involvement in Transition to Kindergarten

The transition from preschool to kindergarten is an important milestone in a child’s education for parents to be involved in. The role of parents during the transition is to gain information on the child’s academics and behavioral experactions and the future kindergarten placement and teacher (McIntyre et al., 2007). Transitioning children from preschool to kindergarten is national priority, but not much emphasis has been put on parental involvement during this time (McIntyre et al., 2007). McIntyre et al. (2007) conducted a study looking into familial experiences and involvement in the transition to kindergarten. Results found that families want more involvement in planning the transition to kindergarten. Families also want more information on academic and behavioral expectations for kindergarten transition (McIntyre et al., 2007). This research indicates that more priority should be put on the whole families involvement in the transition to kindergarten. Family involvement can lead to an improvement in children’s school and life outcomes (McIntyre et al., 2007). Parents should have more opportunities to be involved in their children’s education and transition to kindergarten.
